✈️ Pre-order — expected 6 November. This fabric is on its way to us from France. Order now to reserve your yardage; we cut and ship pre-orders in the order they were placed, as soon as it lands.

Designed by independent studio Atelier 27, Twist is the plain black they wanted and did not have — simplicity and elegance. What keeps it from being plain is the surface: a dense, nubby bouclé-style jacquard texture with fine metallic fibers woven through, so the black shifts between charcoal and near-graphite as it moves and catches an occasional glint of light.

At 372 g/m² this is the heaviest fabric in the range and the one with real coat-weight substance — but it is not stiff. It falls in generous, weighted folds rather than standing away from the body, which makes it as good for a full skirt or wide trousers as for the jacket the weight suggests. There is no stretch. Cut edges are textured and will shed, so overlock or bind them early.

This is a Limited Edition design — produced in a single small run in France and never reprinted once sold out. When this fabric is gone, it is gone for good.

Composition: 38% cotton, 38% polyester, 17% viscose, 4% metallic fibers, 3% polyamide.

Best uses: jackets, blazers, coats, structured skirts, shorts, wide-leg trousers, and occasion dresses.

Care: Machine wash 30°C on a delicate cycle, inside out; do not tumble dry; do not dry clean.

Sold by the half yard.

🪡 Sewing Tips

Pre-wash before cutting — Atelier 27 recommend washing all their fabric before sewing. Use a universal or jeans needle (90/14–100/16) and lengthen the stitch slightly; this is a substantial cloth and a fine needle will struggle. Finish cut edges as soon as they are cut, because the textured weave sheds. Press on the reverse with a pressing cloth and a light hand — too much heat and pressure will flatten the surface texture and dull the metallic fibers, which is the whole point of the fabric. Underlining is unnecessary; the weight does the work.

🧺 Care Instructions

Machine wash at 30°C on a delicate cycle, inside out. Do not tumble dry. Do not dry clean. Press on the reverse with a pressing cloth. Always pre-wash before cutting.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When will my order ship?

This is a pre-order. The fabric is expected to reach us by 6 November, and we cut and ship pre-orders in the order they were placed as soon as it arrives. If you order other items at the same time, the whole order ships together once the fabric is here — place a separate order if you need the rest sooner.

What can I sew with this fabric?

Jackets, blazers, unlined coats, structured skirts, shorts, wide-leg trousers and occasion dresses. At 372 g/m² it is the heaviest fabric we stock from Atelier 27 — think autumn and winter making, and garments you want to have presence.

How much fabric do I need?

Fabric is sold by the half yard, cut in one continuous piece. A fitted top typically takes 2–3 half-yard units, a jacket or blazer 5–6, a skirt 3–4, and a midi dress 5–6 — order 4 units for 2 continuous yards.

Will it shrink?

A little. At 38% cotton and 17% viscose there is enough natural and cellulosic fiber to move on the first wash, even with the polyester content holding it steady. Atelier 27 don't publish a percentage, so pre-wash before cutting rather than gambling on a heavy, expensive cloth.

Is it see-through?

No — at 372 g/m² this is a substantial, entirely opaque fabric; unlined garments are fine, though you may want a lining in a jacket for comfort rather than coverage.

What needle and thread should I use?

A universal or jeans needle (90/14–100/16) with all-purpose polyester thread and a slightly longer stitch; test on a scrap first.

Is it really limited edition?

Yes — Atelier 27 prints each design in a single small run in France and never reprints it. When our fabric sells out, this print is gone for good. We stock it here in the US, so there are no import shipping, tariff, or customs processing fees.
