Custom-Dyed Corozo Nut Buttons — 5 Colors, 4 Sizes

Warm, substantial, and full of natural depth, Matchy Matchy Sewing Club's corozo nut buttons bring an organic, high-end finish to coats, cardigans, blouses, and tailored garments.

Because corozo absorbs dye into its natural grain rather than sitting on the surface, no two buttons are perfectly identical. Every set has subtle variation in tone and pattern, giving your finished piece a one-of-a-kind, artisan touch — and every color in this collection is dyed in-house to coordinate across our matching notions line.

Why sewists love corozo buttons:

  • Hard & scratch-resistant — holds up to daily wear on coats and outerwear
  • Fade-resistant color — dye penetrates the grain instead of just coating it
  • Unique natural grain — every button has its own subtle character
  • Sustainable & renewable — harvested from tagua palm seeds, not cut from the tree
  • Biodegradable — a plastic-free button alternative

Frequently Asked Questions

What are corozo buttons made from?

Corozo buttons are cut from the seed of the tagua palm tree, native to South America. The seed — sometimes called vegetable ivory — is extremely dense and hard, giving corozo buttons a weight and feel similar to animal ivory or high-quality plastic, but entirely natural and plant-based.

Are corozo buttons sustainable?

Yes. Tagua palm seeds fall naturally from the tree when ripe — the tree is never cut down. The seeds are a renewable, biodegradable resource, and harvesting them supports rainforest conservation by giving the trees economic value standing. Corozo buttons are one of the most environmentally responsible button options available.

How many buttons come in each set?

Set quantity varies by size: 1/2" buttons come in sets of 8, 3/4" and 7/8" buttons come in sets of 6, and 1" buttons come in sets of 4. The quantity for your selected size is shown on the product page before you add to cart.

Will the color fade over time?

Corozo buttons are dyed using a process that drives color into the natural grain of the nut rather than coating the surface. This makes them significantly more fade-resistant than painted or surface-dyed buttons. With normal care they should hold their color for the life of the garment.

Can corozo buttons be washed?

Hand washing or dry cleaning is recommended. Avoid prolonged soaking, which can cause the natural material to swell slightly over time. For machine-washable garments, we recommend placing the item in a mesh laundry bag and using a gentle cycle.

Are all buttons in a set identical?

Close, but not perfectly — and that's part of what makes them special. Because each button is cut from a natural seed, there is subtle variation in grain pattern and slight tonal variation from button to button within a set. This is a characteristic of genuine corozo, not a defect.

What sizes are available, and which should I choose?

We carry 1/2" (13mm), 3/4" (19mm), 7/8" (22mm), and 1" (25mm). As a general guide: 1/2" suits shirts and children's garments; 3/4" works well for blouses and lightweight cardigans; 7/8" is a versatile all-rounder for mid-weight garments; and 1" is ideal for coats, jackets, and statement closures.
