Soft White Knit Elastic — 6 Widths, 2.5-Yard Cuts

Soft and comfortable against the skin but with enough structure to hold a waistband securely, Matchy Matchy Sewing Club's white knit elastic stretches significantly without losing its shape — the kind of elastic you want in garments that move with you all day.

Knit elastic is ideal for lightweight fabrics and high-movement garments. We especially love it for elastic-waist pants in linen or lightweight cotton, pull-on shorts, gathered skirts, and lounge pieces — a secure hold without stiffness or bulk.

Why sewists reach for knit elastic:

  • Soft, smooth feel — comfortable worn directly against the skin
  • Excellent stretch recovery — stretches significantly without losing much shape
  • Sew-through friendly — can be stitched through without compromising the stretch, unlike braided elastic
  • Generous cut — one continuous 2.5-yard length per unit, ready for a full waistband with room to spare

Available widths — each sold as one continuous 2.5-yard cut

  • 1/2" — necklines, sleeve hems, and lightweight casings; perfect for puff-sleeve tops
  • 3/4" — cuffs, sleeve casings, and lighter waistbands; a good match for quilted jackets and loungewear
  • 1" — a go-to waistband width for boxer shorts, pajama bottoms, and gathered skirts
  • 1 1/4" — wider waistbands with a smooth, even hold
  • 1 1/2" — supportive waistbands for shorts, pants, and matching lounge sets
  • 2" — wide, secure waistbands for pants, shorts, skirts, and lounge pieces without feeling stiff or bulky

Frequently Asked Questions

How much elastic do I need for a waistband?

A common starting point is your waist (or hip, for pull-on garments) measurement minus 1–2", plus seam allowance for joining the ends. Your pattern will usually specify — and a 2.5-yard cut comfortably covers a waistband for most sizes with plenty left over.

What's the difference between knit and braided elastic?

Knit elastic stays soft and keeps its width when stretched, and it can be sewn through directly — stitching doesn't destroy its recovery. Braided elastic narrows when stretched and loses integrity if you sew through it, so it's best reserved for casings only.

Which width should I choose?

1/2" suits necklines, sleeves, and light casings; 3/4"–1" covers most waistband casings; 1 1/4"–2" gives a wider, more supportive hold for pants, skirts, and lounge pieces.

Can I sew it directly to the fabric?

Yes — knit elastic handles direct application well. Use a zigzag or other stretch stitch and stretch the elastic evenly as you sew.
